Imagine this: you are at your retirement party, the cake has been cut, hands shaken and congratulations offered. A coworker walks up to you and asks, ‘now what will you do?’ While some people know the answer, many aren’t exactly sure. Everyone jokes that they can’t wait to retire, but for some, it can be difficult to leave the structure and routine of the workforce, especially if they were someone who really enjoyed their line of work.

If this is you, don’t worry! Our independent living facilities in Michigan have some advice on what you can look forward to once you are in retirement. Continue reading to learn more!

1.) Spending Time with Family

For many people, there never seemed to be enough hours in the day, especially while working full time. Now, that should hardly be an issue! You won’t ever miss a graduation or birthday party again thanks to a last minute work trip or needing to work late to help a client. Instead, focus on what matters most to you: spending time with the people you love. Take your grandkids to the zoo or park, plan a special Sunday evening meal, arrange a family game night — the time is all yours!

2.) Rediscover your Passion

Our passions are what drive us and keep us motivated and moving even in the face of adversity. For some, their jobs were their passions. For others, this might include traveling or volunteering. Either way, retirement is the perfect opportunity to discover (or rediscover!) what you love. So renew your passport, call up your local non-profit organization, take a class at your local learning annex or community college — either way, it’s time to get back to your passion.

3.) Make yourself Healthier

One of the best things about moving into one of the independent living facilities in Michigan is the chance to focus on your health and well-being. We are all more than a little guilty of abusing our bodies throughout our youth, but now is the time to get back on track. Without an alarm set for work, you can sleep in and get the 8–9 hours of sleep that seniors need each night.

Also, if you’re a resident at The Parkdale, participate in one of the healthy activities on our monthly activity calendar. Go for a walk, take an exercise class, learn yoga — the possibilities are nearly endless!

4.) Find a Hobby to Enjoy

Is there something that you have always wanted to learn or do but never had the time for thanks to your grueling work schedule? This could be anything from photography to sewing to playing tennis. These types of activities really add enrichment to our lives and give us something to look forward to. There is no right or wrong answer to your hobby! Just make sure it is something that makes you happy and adds to your life. Another added bonus would be if this is a hobby you can do with a friend or loved one. This will give you the benefit of socialization as well!
